Coastguards were called to reunite a dog with its owner after it got stuck in a river.

West Bay and Lyme Regis coastguard teams were called around 11.45am yesterday (Thursday) to help the bull dog terrier called 'Prudence' who was trapped in River Char.

A spokesman for Lyme Regis Coastguard said: "Prudence had fallen down a steep bank through very thick undergrowth into the river. She was only accessible from the other side of the river.

"Prudence was safely recovered back to the riverbank and reunited with her owner.

"The owner called the coastguard rather than putting herself at risk. We would encourage any dog owners whose animal gets into trouble to call the coastguard rather than get in harm's way.

"Remember, for any emergencies on the cliffs, beach, sea or tidal river, call 999 and ask for the coastguard."
