Stepping Out, the Bridport-based group that gives active help through exercise to those recovering from cancer, has received a donation of £500 that was raised by the Bridport branch of Higos, the insurance services group, at a charity quiz night.
A cheque was presented to Richard Walsh and Jo Perfect, the group's instructors, at a Stepping Out class held at Bridport Leisure Centre, with many grateful members present.
Richard said: "It is only with the generous support of organisations and businesses like Higos that Stepping Out is able to continue helping people with their recovery from cancer."
The group has operated continuously since March 2015; the twice weekly classes are free at the point of delivery and are open to men and women of all age groups. They are adapted to suit an individual's activity levels and cancer diagnosis and treatment.
The organisers, both Level 4 cancer and exercise rehabilitation specialist instructors, are keen to welcome new members. The classes are open to those living in Bridport, Dorchester and the surrounding areas who have a cancer diagnosis, and their carer or partner, following consultation with Jo and Richard.
If you are interested in joining you will need to ask your doctor or another health professional for a referral to the Stepping Out scheme. Once you have your completed referral form please email Jo Perfect, the programme manager, on [email protected], to arrange an initial assessment.
Besides the circuit exercise classes, which start with the Tripudio flow movement that targets the lymphatic system, there is a chance to take part in 'taster' sessions. These include Nordic walking, yoga, walking football, table-tennis and relaxation. In addition there are educational talks on subjects such as diet and nutrition and mindfulness. Participants also play indoor bowls on a regular basis.
Stepping Out aims to improve strength, flexibility, balance and overall fitness and well-being, leading to a more active lifestyle. The group also provides friendship and support and a chance to meet others who are living with cancer.
