A new year of community events in Bridport got underway with wassailing celebrations at the town's Community Orchard on Sunday afternoon.

Wassailing is an ancient custom of celebrating winter and hoping for a good harvest for the coming year.

Large crowds gathered at the orchard behind St Mary's Church, where they enjoyed cider and mulled apple juice from Dorset Nectar, and music and dancing by Wyld Morris – with many even giving it a go themselves.

Storyteller Martin Maudsley then led the traditional wassailing ceremony, crowning two Wassail Queens, blessing the trees with bread and cider and inviting all to make noise to scare away evil spirits.

The Bridport Community Orchard annual general meeting will be held on January 25 from 7pm at Mountfield House in Bridport and all are welcome.
