The annual Bridport Turnip Prize is returning, giving the town's most creative an outlet to showcase their art.

The spoof event at The Ropemakers pub will be back on Sunday, January 31 from 3pm.

John Baker, landlord of The Ropemakers, said: "During the last few months, it has been very hard for creative people to show their talents and get the appropriate feedback for their creations. It is therefore with great pleasure that we announce the third Bridport Turnip Prize.

"It's just a fun way to raise money for charity, especially as we have such a large range of talented creative people in the area."

It is inspired as a spoof on the Tate Gallery's Turner Prize and there are three rules:

  1. Does it show lack of effort?
  2. Entries must have an alliteration or pun in the title
  3. Is it crap?

Entries with too much effort or not crap enough, will be immediately disqualified.

The prize will be a turnip nailed to a lump of wood and each year's winner can keep their trophy for life.

Overall, the concept will be, 'we know it's rubbish, but is it art?'

The last Bridport Turnip Prize's winning entry was an empty bag of Mini Cheddars.

John added: "A local couple came in on the afternoon of last year's event and ordered a couple of drinks and a bag of Mini Cheddars. The lady ate the snacks and they suddenly realised that they had created their entry on the spot with absolutely no effort at all."

Entries should be sent by email to [email protected] by Sunday, January 17, 2021, for judging to start during the following week.

A shortlist will be announced on Sunday, January 24. The final placings will be announced on Sunday, January 31. The winner will receive a certificate and a special trophy.

Entrants are asked to make a donation to Parkinson's UK at The Ropemakers' Just Giving page.
