Community spirit has boomed at the town's fridge, which is almost three years old.

Despite having to close a couple of times during lockdowns, Bridport Community Fridge is up and running, offering food that would have gone to waste to local people.

As well as operating from its base at the Chapel in the Garden, the team has also collaborated with Bridport Garden Glut stall which is at St Swithun's Church car park on Thursdays.

Sarah Jones, of Bridport Community Fridge, said: "That's working really well. It's brilliant because we've made some fantastic community links and whatever food is left down there comes back to us - it's put together really nicely."

At Bridport Community Fridge, people can go to the front door and are helped with what food is available that day.

Sarah added: "It's very popular, we have a steady influx of people all morning and most of the food goes.

"The links we've made have been tremendous and in lockdown the word has got out even more and all walks of life are using it. We always say it is open to everybody and people say, 'we don't need it', but it is for everybody.

"People are very good at keeping it community spirited and people want to make sure it's shared around.

"For me, the main thing is that it has got a great sense of community and people have made friends, people work together in bubbles."

The community fridge gets most of its donations from Waitrose and Co-op, but has had a lot of donations from local businesses too.

"We had the Hyde care home empty out its cupboards of dried goods, we've had a local shop where its dried goods were going out of date and they came to us - we just take whatever we can.

"Wetherspoons also emptied its store cupboards and we had loads of stuff and Leakers Bakery give their bread."

Bridport Community Fridge will have been open for three years in April.

Sarah said: "Because we can't meet too many people, we're going to wait until May and have more of a garden party and thank the volunteers, because without them it wouldn't run, they are amazing and so committed."

Bridport Community Fridge is not a food bank and keeps food waste from landfill. It is open to everybody and anybody. It is open 10am to 1pm on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
