Catalytic converter thefts have increased nationally and in Dorset

The theft of catalytic converters from vehicles has risen nationally in recent years, including a spate of this type of crime in the Bridport, Beaminster and Lyme Regis areas.

The rise in price of metals that may be contained in catalytic converters make them very profitable for criminals.

There has been a recent rise of such thefts in Dorset and police have warned residents across Bridport and surrounding areas to be vigilant, consider their vehicle security and report any suspicious activity or crime.

Last September and October, about five thefts of catalytic converters were reported across the Bridport, Beaminster and Lyme Regis areas.

The most common targets are vehicles parked where they are easily accessible, or unlikely to disturb people, such as on roads or in isolated areas.

Thieves will often use a power tool to cut converters off and this can take seconds to do.

If you wish to report any information or suspicious behaviour, or would like further security advice, contact Dorset Police on 101, or online at www.dorset.police.uk

If you believe a crime is in progress, call 999 immediately.
