As part of a range of birthday challenges and in a bid to range as much money as possible for charity, Sam Rose will be heading off on a 50-mile cycle from Bridport this weekend.

Sam Rose decided to take on three gruelling challenges last year to mark a milestone birthday and to raise thousands of pounds for Julia's house children's hospice.

Sam said: "I turned 50 in September 2020 - mid pandemic - and decided to mark this by blundering unprepared into a range of ridiculously big, physical challenges over the year which involve the number 50, and to raise money for a great local charity - Julia's House children's hospice.

"I am supporting Julia's House because it is an amazing organisation that helps families facing unimaginable heartbreak - the knowledge that their child may not live into adulthood. I am so lucky to have two amazing boys who don't face any of the problems that Julia's House children do, so this is on their behalf as well as mine."

Sam has included running, cycling and paddleboarding into his three challenges and will be doing his second challenge - a 50km run from Bridport - on Sunday (June 13).

He added: "I did my first challenge, a 50km run from Ham Hill to Lyme Regis in October last year and my second one is the coming weekend. I will be doing a 50-mile cycle, starting in Bridport, via Thorncombe, Maiden Newton and Hardy Monument, finishing in West Bay.

"The third challenge will be a 50km paddleboard from Exmouth to West Bay, date to be confirmed."

Sam hopes to raise £5,000 and has currently raised just over £1,000. You can donate here or put some money in his collection box at Groves Nurseries.

Sam said: "Julia's House is an amazing charity that helps children with uncertain futures and supports their families too. It is about compassion, quality of life and dignity, something we all deserve. Please make a donation, any donation, to help them - thank you so much."
