Fishermen helped save a 62-year-old swimmer in West Bay after she shouted for helped.

Emergency services, including West Bay Coastguard, Lyme Regis RNLI lifeboat, South Western Ambulance Service and air ambulance were called to West Bay just before 1pm today (Friday).

A 999 call had been made reporting that a 62-year-old female swimmer was in difficulty and shouting for help around 40 yards from the end of East Pier.

Whilst the emergency services were on their way, those on a fishing boat helped the woman from the water and took her into West Bay harbour.

A spokesman for West Bay Coastguard said: "Arriving on scene, officers from West Bay Coastguard boarded the fishing vessel and assessed the casualty who was being cared for by a first aider, the fishermen and harbour team.

"After initial first aid, the casualty was packaged into the team's stretcher and transported from the boat into the care of the South Western Ambulance Service and air ambulance air team who were also now on scene.

"We wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery.

"Special thanks goes out to the first informant who dialled 999, and to the crew of the local fishing vessel who assisted the casualty from the water."
