Totally Locally Bridport's Magic Tenner campaign is being launched in the town later this month to turn a spotlight on independent businesses.

It will highlight how our local shops, services and organisations support each other, focusing on how £10 grows as it moves around the town and adds extra cash into our local economy.

The campaign will run from May 28 to July 30, over which time Totally Locally Bridport will highlight just how the magic tenner works and grow the campaign with promotions and community engagement throughout the 10 weeks.

The idea behind it is if you spend £10 in a shop that sells items from local producers, the amount of money that goes back into the local economy can be more than £50.

The example the Totally Locally Bridport team give is, if you buy a locally-made pie from a local shop, a big part of your money is passed on to the local piemaker. The shop employs a local accountant or even a decorator and in turn the piemaker, who sources his ingredients from a local farm, spends a big percentage of his money with the farmer. The farmer then spends some of his money at his local garage, the garage owner then spends locally and so on.

With each step, around 80 per cent of each spend goes into the local economy. So, in effect, the money that stays within the local area gets more and more.

A spokesman said: "Local independent businesses are far more likely to use other local firms than any of the big national giants - it's what makes them tick and you know the value of keeping it 'Totally locally'.

"The Magic Tenner campaign helps businesses to show just how many other local businesses they use with simple posters, banners and messages and encourages all local, independent businesses to get involved - whether they are on the high street or not.

"Bridport businesses are welcoming the campaign, which is designed to start ongoing conversations about shopping local and just how essential local businesses are."

More than 50 businesses have signed up to take part and photos for each shop will be compiled into weekly posters with six new businesses featured every week.

The Totally Locally team will be producing a shopping map and individual businesses will be making recommendations, highlighting products or creating special offers.

Team member Kim Squirrell said: "The Magic tenner is a brilliant opportunity to find out more about your local retailers and the other local businesses that supply them with services or goods.

"We're so lucky here in Bridport to have such a range of independent businesses with a wealth of knowledge and experience they're ready to share.

"As with all our campaigns, it's all about starting a conversation about what a healthy local economy looks like and what we can do to ensure Bridport continues to be a vibrant and distinctive place to live. To that end, we'll be setting up a stall during the Magic Tenner campaign to share and celebrate the whole range of Bridport independents."
