Two new shopping days launched to encourage extra footfall in Bridport
A spotlight is being shone on Bridport's businesses with two new local shopping days.
The town's independent, local business owners have come together to promote the wonderful shops in the town and on outlaying trading estates to encourage extra footfall.
The group is launching Tenner Tuesday - highlighting how £10 moves around the local economy and grows as each local business supports other local businesses, so £10 spent locally ends up being worth £50. Find out more about the Magic Tenner here.
It is also starting Fiver Friday - highlighting how spending an extra fiver locally adds millions of pounds to a local economy. If every adult spent an extra £5 in local shops rather than online or in a big supermarket, it would add an extra £4.6million pounds to our local economy.
Roy Gregory, owner of Clocktower Music and Clocktower Too, said: "We have drawn on two campaigns from Totally Locally to highlight how spending locally impacts the local economy. Now we are launching as a fully-fledged Totally Locally town so we can expand that message and demonstrate just how essential local businesses are to maintaining a healthy local economy.
"One business joining the campaign commented that 'having something happening all year round will be more effective that the twice a year campaign'.
"We believe that these two new local shopping days will establish an ongoing conversation and shine a spotlight on that is available locally and the wealth of knowledge and support there is in our local businesses community that benefits the town and its residents.
"The campaign has the support of the town council and Bridport Business Chamber."
Bridport mayor, councillor Ian Bark, said: "Business is a vital part of what makes Bridport such a vibrant town in which to live. it is not only the high street with its range of wonderful shops, but businesses large and small beavering away on trading estates, in offices and at home that make this an economically healthy town throughout the year.
"That said, we are a coastal town and there is a distinct seasonality to the trading that takes place in some sectors more than others. The hope is always that the peaks are sufficiently high to fill the troughs.
"To that end as mayor I will be supporting the Totally Locally group in its efforts to increase footfall to the independent businesses in the town. But increasing footfall is just the first step, it is important that once here, potential customers have a positive experience and access to the things they want to buy. It is in reality a three-stage process: stage 1 - enticing people into town, stage 2 - enticing people into businesses, stage 3 - enticing people to purchase.
"There is much work to be done and I am sure that by working together we can take Bridport forward into a new, more prosperous era for business and pleasanter shopping and relaxing era for customers."
