Two new short films shot in West Dorset will be premiered in Bridport next week.

Chasing Cow Productions, a collective of young artists, is bringing 'An Evening of Modernism' to the town with the screenings and a guest talk.

The evening's feature event will be the premiere screening of 'The Wind Blows'.

Based on the short story by Katherine Mansfield, this adaptation is set in Edwardian England over the course of a day, and captures a series of fleeting moments and encounters experienced by the film's young protagonist, Matilda, played by Tilly Boulay.

The film was shot around the West Dorset area, in Lyme Regis, Beaminster, Salway Ash and Monkton Wyld Court. Directed by local artist Grace Crabtree, the piece also features an original soundtrack by local musician and composer Robert Lee. Supporting roles are played by Robin Lee and Howie Blow.

Grace Crabtree said: "Although Mansfield's story is set in New Zealand, our retelling unfolds in the landscape and coastline of West Dorset and we had a fun challenge finding Edwardian-esque interiors and costumes to bring this to life.

"A particular draw to adapting this story to film was the soundscape; voices are often off-scene, like a radio play, and the central force of the wind, which affects the moods and movements of the characters, is always present."

The evening will also include a short sketch filmed in the Lyric Theatre last year, 'The Modernists Apply for Arts Funding', directed by Fred Warren and staring Tobias Wrightman, Bryony Moores O'Sullivan, Tom Beed and Grace Crabtree as struggling 20th century writers and artists.

Dr Beci Carver, author and academic from the University of Exeter, whose published works include Granular Modernism, will also be giving a talk on the evening.

Fred Warren, co-founder of Chasing Cow, said: "After a challenging couple of years, we're really excited to be able to show two brand new films.

"The two films are very different, but both engage with modernism in its complexity and contradictions and hopefully show the breadth that our small team is capable of.

"We're incredibly grateful to the members of the local community who helped these films come together, whether by offering locations, costumes, or lending equipment. Thy continue to prove that this area is a fantastic place for filmmaking.

"We hope as many people as possible will be able to come along to this event to see what we've been up to."

The event takes place at Bridport United Church on Thursday, March 3 from 7pm

Tickets on the door cost £7 and under 30s go free.
