Graffiti at Bridport's Millennium Green has been condemned as "a mindless act of vandalism" and police will be patrolling the area.
The outdoor performance area at Mountfield used by bands and singers when events are held at the green was spray painted with 'BLM' and other words and signs.
Will Austin, town clerk at Bridport Town Council, said: "This is a mindless act of vandalism and I would urge anyone with any information to contact the police or the town council.
"We don't want to see people criminalised for stupidity but we do want to make sure they understand the consequences of their actions.
"The graffiti damaged a heritage stone wall and meant that two Council officers had to spend hours cleaning it off. At a time when my colleagues are needed more than ever, this is the last thing we need.
"Despite the apparent references to BLM and cleaning the oceans, I don't think for a moment that whoever did this was making a serious political statement.
"Bridport has a strong reputation for campaigning against racism and on the climate emergency, and the Town Council supports both.
"I know for certain that those in our community who do so much on these issues would not seek to further their cause by trashing our beautiful town."
Police will be continuing patrols in the Mountfield area.
A spokesman for Bridport police said: "Officers from the neighbourhood team received a report of a graffiti attack at Mountfield, Rax Lane, Bridport.
"Patrols have been conducted over the last few days and will continue in this location.
"Please continue to report your concerns to us."
