Two Bridport students are standing for the UK Youth Parliament to bring about change for young people.

Saffi in Year 10 and Stan in Year 11, both at the Sir John Colfox Academy, are campaigning for votes in the election because they are keen to represent young people and make the world a better place.

Stan, 15, said: "I want to change things for young people, which is why I'm campaigning for students' rights and freedoms.

"I think uniform restrictions should be loosened and I'd like to see more places where young people can express themselves. I am also campaigning for more action on climate change and plastic pollution."

Saffi, 14, said: "I am running for the UK Youth Parliament because I am passionate about helping young people to have a better life. I am campaigning to stop discrimination and improve access to mental health services."

Stan and Saffi are standing against young people from other Dorset schools. If they are elected, they will represent the whole county at a national level.

Adam Shelley, headteacher of the Sir John Colfox Academy, said: "We are very proud of Saffi and Stan, they are both great candidates and we wish them luck.

"We are keen to support the UK Youth Parliament elections and encourage our students to stand and also to vote, because it is a great way of learning how democracy works, how important voting is and how we can all take part and make a difference."

Students at the Sir John Colfox Academy will vote in the election and ballot boxes set up.

Natalie Burden, participation co-ordinator at the Sir John Colfox Academy, said: "It is brilliant to see that our students are so passionate about improving the world around them. We are looking forward to the elections next week."

The UK Youth Parliament is run by the British Youth Council and provides opportunities for 11 to 18-year-olds to use their voice to bring about social change.

Every year, Dorset's young people elect two members of the UK Youth Parliament and two deputy members. They represent Dorset nationally and attend events like the UK Youth Parliament and an annual House of Commons debate. More information is available here.
