The crew at Bridport Fire Station is urging residents to let them know if they are planning on having a bonfire after multiple firefighters across the area were called to a suspected barn fire.

Both Bridport fire engines and the water carrier, along with Charmouth Fire Station, were called to the fire in Bothenhampton just before 8.45pm last night (Monday).

Due to the narrow farm track, crews had to make their way on foot approximately half a kilometre to the fire's location.

The fire was found to be a large unattended bonfire.

A spokesman for Bridport Fire Station said: "Due to the wind direction, embers were being blown towards and into an adjacent barn containing hay bales and farm machinery.

"Bridport's 4x4 appliance made its way to the fire and crews used on hose reel jet and small tools to extinguish the fire. As the farm track was unsuitable for large appliances, two Land Rovers were requested. These attended from Beaminster Fire Station and Maiden Newton Fire Station.

"Once the water had been depleted on Bridport's 4x4 appliance, the incident was handed over to Maiden Newton and Beaminster to continue damping down.

"The incident resulted in a large mobilisation of multiple appliances and crew from across West Dorset.

"If you're planning on having a bonfire, please inform our control by calling 0306 799 0019 and always stay with the fire in case it should go out of control."
