For its 80th call this year, West Bay Coastguard was called out to help a 68-year-old woman who had fallen on the coast path near Burton Bradstock.

The woman was walking with her husband yesterday morning (Sunday) and slipped on mud while walking down towards the beach car park. It is thought she broke her ankle and injured her wrist.

A spokesman for West Bay Coastguard said: "Officers quickly made their way to the station in West Bay to pick up their equipment and 4x4 rescue vehicle then headed for Hive Beach.

"Our flank team from Lyme Regis were tasked to provide additional officers should an extended stretcher carry be required.

"On arrival at the scene, the casualty was located and officers were able to drive off-road to within a few metres of her position.

"After an initial assessment, her ankle injury was stabilised with a splint and fracture straps, she was then assisted into the team's rescue vehicle.

"After a short drive back down to the car park, she was transferred into her own vehicle and driven the Dorset County Hospital by her husband for onward care.

"We wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery.

"Special thanks goes out to the National Trust team for providing initial care until the arrival of the emergency services.

"Stay safe on the coast this winter, but if you find yourself in difficulty or if you see something that gives you cause for concern, do not hesitate, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."
