Works on a new 'click and collect' and delivery building have started at Morrisons in Bridport.
The supermarket has submitted plans for a single-storey extension with vehicle parking canopy in its car park near to Bradfords and by the disabled and parent and child parking bays. There will be a loss of 29 parking spaces and it's not known if disabled or parent and child bays are included in these.
Plans show a building with three parking bays within a fenced area, as well as dedicated collection parking bays.
The plans were supported by Bridport Town Council when they were discussed at its planning committee meeting on Monday, but there were concerns about the re-routing of a cycle path that comes from A35 Sea Road South, down into the Bradfords turning and into the car park where the service will be operating.
Cllr Dave Bolwell, chairman of the committee, said: "It's a three-bay click and collect delivery pod.
"I did talk to a planning officer looking after this [about] the re-routing of the path and apparently it has been agreed in principle for them to do that and he is still waiting for an official plan to come in from Morrisons."
Cllr Dave Rickard said the cycle path has become overgrown and is not maintained by Morrisons, something the town council could look at.
Dorset Council highways authority also wanted a plan showing the re-routing of the path before it made its formal recommendation.
Engineer Guy Tetley said: "Given the purpose of the proposal is to expand the home delivery service operations of the site – which helps to reduce the number of customer vehicles attending the site and offers a more efficient 'linked trip' approach – it is considered that the highway authority has no objection, in principle to the proposals.
"However, it is not clear from the plans what will happen t the existing south-eastern pedestrian access to the site from the A35. The plans indicate that it will remain but also appear to indicate a secure fence around the delivery van loading area. Given the nature of the activity in this location, the pedestrian access should be re-routed outside the turning and loading area."
Cllr Geoff Ackerman wanted to make sure that work would not take place throughout the night after resurfacing works at the supermarket's car park earlier this year went on into the early hours and severely disturbed nearby residents.
Cllr Bolwell said there would not be any evening work.
The application has yet to be approved by Dorset Council.
