A market trader has packed up after more than 40 years of selling on Bridport market

John Charnley will no longer be on South Street selling crockery and glass after he said farewell and was given a special send-off by the town crier.

The video can be seen on our Facebook page.

John started on the market in 1980 after he broke his wrist and thumb in a motorbike accident.

He said: "I couldn't go to work so I got bored. I went to an auction in Crewkerne, bought some stuff, went the following week and bought a bit more and ended up with loads of it and thought, 'I need to get rid of some of this'.

"I did Bridport market and made more in that first day than I used to make in a week. I thought if I can do this a few days a week, I'm going to be alright. It wasn't quite as easy as that, but I carried on."

John says the most memorable thing he will take from his time on the market is the customers.

"The nice customers, having a bit of a laugh and a joke," he added.

"I have customers all over the place; Bournemouth, Exeter, Bath and we used to have people come over from Sweden."

He said he will miss the other traders, customers and the social side the most and he would like to thank all his customers over the years and other traders for a "very nice send-off", as well as the town crier and town surveyor Daryl Chambers.

He was also presented with a bottle of bubbly and Bridport Market reusable bag from Daryl.
