'Beacon of hope' to stay up in West Bay until Candlemas Day
The 'beacon of hope' will stay up in West Bay.
In these troubling times, it makes a change to see and hear cheerful things, the Christmas tree on the green in West Bay is one and a welcoming sight as you enter West Bay.
It is erected every year by the West Bay Days committee, a group of volunteers who raise money through events for local causes.
Normally, the tree would be taken down today (Monday) but the committee this year has decided that it should stay up for a little longer.
It will stay in place until February 2, or Candlemas Day as it's known in the church calendar. Candlemas Day was always the traditional day to take down Christmas decorations, but was changed to the 12th day by the Victorians.
Last year's events organised by the West Bay Days committee, which include Pirate Day and the Bonfire by the Beach, unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, but the tree has been described as a simple 'beacon of hope' and will now be there for a further three weeks.
