A Bridport-based gelato business has been named a champion of ice cream with its sorbet described as 'beautiful mouth fuel'.

Baboo Gelato's salted caramel gelato was Taste of the West's champion ice cream for 2020.

Its elderflower sorbet was also a winner in the Great British Food Awards' best British speciality category.

Judge's feedback was: "Beautiful mouth fuel which is exactly what you want from a sorbet. Well balanced flavour with a blossom of elderflower scent on the pallet. All in all, a superb product."

Sam Hanbury of Baboo said: "Annie and I set up Baboo in 2015 because we wanted to make really good ice cream and it's fantastic to get these awards, but it's more fantastic that people enjoy it and come for it and want more of it. What's more pleasing for us is to see people queuing outside the kiosks every day and really enjoying it.

"We're not in it for the awards, we're in it to make really good ice cream and awards are a nice icing on the cake for it all."

Sam says that making ice cream is a matter of no shortcuts and having really fantastic ingredients.

He added: "I often think in the UK, people think that begins and ends with milk. Milk is really important but it's all the other ingredients as well. We go and buy raspberries, gooseberries, pears and plums, so the ingredients are absolutely critical and having the right recipe and just being completely obsessed with it.

"We think gelato is a better way of making ice cream because it uses less fat and with less fat you use less sugar and it's more intense tasting.

"Being obsessed with it means everything, from having the right machinery to making sure everything is always at the right temperature – it's a real science making ice cream.

"We really care about it."

The Baboo kiosks are currently closed but to get the latest updates, search for Baboo Gelato on Facebook.
