Bridport: 'McClements Madness' raise thousands of pounds taking on the Jurassic Coast Challenge
Thousands of pounds have been raised by a dedicated family and friends who took on the gruelling Jurassic Coast Challenge.
Bridport resident Christine McClements and five other members of her family and friends walked 100km along the Jurassic Coast last month over two days, finishing in West Bay.
Following the death of her brother-in-law, John, Christine wanted to do something to "fight back… something challenging, something amazing, something to raise money" and most importantly, something to make those who loved her, proud of her.
That was when the Jurassic Coast Challenge was suggested.
Christine's eldest daughter Helen, her nephew George, his partner Liz, Christine's brother Mick and sister-in-law Rachel, as well as Clare, a family friend, made up the 'McClements Madness' team.
Christine said: "It was the toughest thing I have ever done, our friend Clare had blisters from 3km and how she managed to continue I will never know. My daughter also suffered with terrible blisters.
"I, probably being the most unfit, very nearly didn't complete it. If it hadn't been for my daughter's continuous encouragement, my exhaustion from Durdle Door would have finished me off."
The group managed to rest for a couple of hours after arriving at Lodmoor Park in Weymouth - the 58km point - at around midnight on the Saturday and headed to Bridport - a further 42km - at around 6.30am.
"Some people actually continued this challenge right through the night!
"At around 3pm on the Sunday, the weather set in - the wind was something else and torrential rain added to the pleasure.
"Reaching West Bay was amazing, there was only one way down the cliff, we slid down in hysterical laughter on our backsides.
"Amazing family members and wonderful friends helped to support us along the way, carrying our rucksacks on occasion, lifting both our spirits and picking us up when we slipped in the mud.
"This challenge is definitely not for the faint hearted, even the fit members of the family found it extremely tough."
They all managed to complete the 100km challenge, something, Christine says, a third of those taking part were unable to do.
Christine has highlighted her daughter, Helen, as her hero throughout the challenge as without her she could not complete it.
Together, they raised more than £7,800 pounds for charities of their choice.
Mick, Helen and George raised £1,620, £1,097 and £580 respectively for Macmillan, Christine raised £1,277 for Bowel Cancer UK, Rachel raised £1,510 for Home For All and Clare raised £1,785 for Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool.
