A regular fixture in Bridport for over 20 years - Leakers Bakery will be closing later this month.

The owners of Leakers on East Street announced a "very difficult decision" to close.

The historic building has a long tradition dating back to the 1830s. Master Baker and wedding cake specialist G.S. Leaker took over the bakery in 1914 and the name has remained. The current owners took over in 2002.

However, an announcement on social media today (5th) says the business has been put into a position of uncertainty due to "escalating costs".

They said that rising costs of raw ingredients and unsustainable energy costs had contributed. Plans were also refused for solar panels to be installed on the building.

In a statement, Leakers said: "As you may know, we first took over Leakers in 2002 and along with a wonderful team we have continued to bake and supply the local community throughout challenging times including the recent pandemic.

"We have so enjoyed serving you all over the past 20 years, giving our very best and making some good friends along the way. We thank you for your loyalty over those many years."

The last day of trading will be Friday 14th October.
