Bridport Carnival royalty crowned ahead of the big day on Saturday

By Lottie Welch 17th Aug 2022

Ahead of the Bridport Carnival procession this Saturday, this year's royalty has been officially crowned.

Held at Bridport Arts Centre on Monday, carnival princess Willow Jeffrey and carnival prince Oliver Barnett, along with attendants Maisie Grace Loveless and Millie Frampton, received their crowns from Bridport mayor Ian Bark.

A spokesman for Bridport Carnival Committee said: "The crowning went very well, when carnival prince - eight-year-old Oliver Barnett - was crowned as our first ever prince, I believe, along with eight-year-old Willow Jeffrey as carnival princess. Thanks to the arts centre, singer Sarah Hannan and photographer Tim Russ.

"We are hoping all the regular events will be supported as usual, with a special emphasis on the new carnival event, Battle of the Buskers on Thursday at 6pm in the rugby club - a great new family event.

"The carnival committee enable the carnival procession to happen - with a lot of help from Daryl and team at the town council - so we hope that you are going to make the most of it by joining in with a lot of fun, innovative entries - it is your carnival, so do your bit.

"I think it is fair to say that after Tuesday's deluge, we are not as worried as we were regarding the tinder dry conditions for the torchlight procession, but we are still asking residents of West Bay Road to come out in force and watch, but please bring a bucket of water out with you - just in case.

"We have many volunteers to help as stewards for the torchlight to help ensure a trouble-free evening, but there's always room for more. There will also be a large police, security, medical and fire presence, but we are hoping that they will not be needed in their professional capacities.

"Please not that no wood is required for the bonfire this year due to the dry conditions.

"Hope everyone has a lovely, fun, trouble-free week of entertainment."
