We are introducing an 'event of the week' article to highlight a great event in or around Bridport.

And this week's event is Bridport Twinning Association's French wine and cheese evening on Saturday (September 11).

It will be held at Marsh Barn, near West Bay, from 7pm and all are welcome.

Enjoy a glass of wine and light snacks on arrival, followed by a generous spread of delicious cheeses with assorted fresh bread and, later on, strawberries and cream. There will of course be more wine and soft drinks on offer for a small price per glass.

Jonathan Dines, chairman of Bridport Twinning Association, said: "It's sure to be a lovely evening with entertainment from the musical duo The Free Spirits, a sing-along to La Marseillaise - learn those words before Saturday! - a little bit of poetry and a raffle to win some fabulous prizes, including a bumper hamper.

"As well as having a generally good time, it's a chance for anyone who's interested to find out more about the association and why Bridport is so lucky to be twinned with Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue."

The Bridport twinning association is entirely self-financing so every year members organise several events to raise money to pay for the activities and meals they provide when they host the biennial visits from their French friends. Normally, they would celebrate Bastille Day in Bridport with some kind of jamboree, but as that was not possible this year, they are throwing a bit of a party this Saturday instead.

Tickets cost £10 per person and can be reserved by calling 075543 11775 or emailing [email protected]

About Bridport Twinning Association

The twinning of Bridport with the small Normandy fishing town of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue began just over 40 years ago and the links between the two communities have remained strong ever since.

Before Covid, a group of Bridport members would visit St Vaast every two years over a long weekend and, in turn, friends from St Vaast would come to Bridport every other year, meaning there would be a proper exchange visit between the two towns on an annual basis.

It was Bridport's turn to visit in 2020, but that has now been postponed to 2022. It will be a very special weekend next year as it will coincide with the celebration in St Vaast of the Benediction de la Mer (or Blessing of the Boats, as we call it). This only takes place every 10 years and the town comes alive with fantastic flower decorations and celebratory scenes that make for an amazing spectacle and atmosphere.

The main purpose of the association is to develop strong ties of friendship and understanding between the two communities and, hopefully, in a small way, between the two countries. These get-togethers on both sides of the Channel have resulted in lasting and close friendships between families in the two towns.
