Bridport Leisure Centre has been able to reopen its doors and welcome back customers thanks to the support of local councils and Dorset Police.

The centre had to close on Tuesday after travellers came onto the site. There was around 14 caravans and more than 30 people.

But it was able to reopen yesterday (Wednesday) after help and support from town clerk Will Austin, Bridport Town Council, Dorset Council and Dorset Police.

A team of staff also spent the morning clearing the site of litter.

Will Thrower, Bridport Leisure Centre manager, said: "We're just pleased that Will Austin, the town council, Dorset Police and their prompt support of us has allowed us to reopen, not only the leisure centre but ultimately the Covid testing site, which is essential to the community.

"We're grateful that after the 12 months we have had that our facility has been able to reopen quickly.

"The reason we closed the leisure centre was because of all the Covid restrictions we have in place, we couldn't safely manage the entrance and exit points following relevant guidelines we've got from our authorities, that's why the decision was made to close the site until we could manage that."

The centre gave regular updates about reopening on its social media sites and in emails to members. If any members did not see these, could they contact the leisure centre to ensure their records are up-to-date.
