Bridport Leisure Centre set to reopen after travellers move on from the site
Bridport Leisure Centre (BLC) is expected to reopen at 1pm today (Wednesday) after it was closed due to travellers on the site.
It was announced yesterday that the centre had to close "due to reasons beyond the leisure centre's control" until further notice.
Centre manager Will Thrower announced on the BLC's Facebook page that Dorset Police are now handling the situation.
He said: "We are confident that we will be able to reopen our doors from 1pm. Should this situation change, we will update everyone ASAP.
"We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused any of our members, especially if they have missed any notifications or emails via social media.
"Thank you for your continued support of the leisure centre and we look forward to welcoming you all back in due course."
Dorset Police were contacted at around 7.50am yesterday (Tuesday) about the group at the centre on Skilling Hill Road.
A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "Following discussion with the local authority and leisure centre, officers have given the group a direction under section 62 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act to vacate the site.
"Officers have been carrying out regular patrols in the area and have been liaising with those present as well as the local community.
"We will continue to liaise with the council to monitor the situation and will be taking appropriate further action as required."
The group has left BLC, but has left rubbish scattered around the site and a fence and sign have been damaged.
