Symondsbury Primary School pupils are helping spread the message of the devastating impact plastic is having on marine life.

Children recently enjoyed a model making session with local artist Peter Margerum as part of West Bay Discovery Centre's 'Turning the Tide' season.

The Turning the Tide season of displays and activities highlights the problems of plastic pollution of our seas and beaches.

John West, of West Bay Discovery Centre, said: "We are working with Plastic Free Bridport, Litter Free Dorset and Five Things Clear to highlight the problems caused to the marine environment by single use plastic.

"A recent study by Plymouth University found that around a third of sea fish have traces of plastic in them and with around 2.5 billion plastic bottles of water alone sold by UK supermarkets each year, the problem is only going to get worse."

The session, sponsored by the discovery centre, involved the children working with Peter Margerum to create make believe sea creatures from plastic items found on local beaches. The school then visited the discovery centre where they saw some of their creations on display outside the building.

The discovery centre's Turning the Tide exhibition on plastic runs until October 30. Forthcoming events include drop-in creative art sessions for young people with artist Darrell Wakelam, taking place on the green adjacent to The Salt House at West Bay on August 11 and 12.
