Student librarians at the Sir John Colfox School have launched a 'Buy a Book for our School Library' appeal.

Kitty and Amber are hoping that generous local people might consider buying a book for their library while they are out shopping and have enlisted the support of The Book Shop in Bridport, which has kindly agreed to host their wish list of books and donate books to the Colfox library. The list includes new fiction, as well as colourful new reference books.

Amber, 15, said: "We thought of the idea when we were doing work experience in the library. Nicky from The Book Shop came in to advise us about ways to promote reading and also offered to help us set up our appeal, which we were delighted about."

Kitty, 14, added: "Some young people don't have a lot of books at home, so making sure our library has the very latest and enticing books is more important than ever. We do have a budget for new books, but we are always keen to get as many more as possible.

"Thanks in advance to anyone who might consider buying a book for our library and thanks also to the book shop for helping us. Thanks also to The Book Shop for giving us a lovely box of books."

Nicky Mathewson from The Book Shop in South Street came to visit the students at their library recently.

She said: "It was lovely to mee Colfox's enthusiastic and enterprising student librarians.

"We are of course very happy to help their appeal and encourage Bridport's next generation of readers. I know how generous our regular customers are, so I think their appeal stands a good chance."

Liz Launder, literacy and reading co-ordinator at the Sir John Colfox Academy, said: "Learning to love reading is a joy, it is great for our wellbeing and research also shows it is the one thing most likely to lead to success in life.

"There is a book out there for everyone, and we are determined to find the right book for every student, with that in mind we recently polled our students to make sure the new books we are getting are what they want.

"The more choice we have, the more we can offer, so I'm delighted that our student librarians are working on this appeal with the brilliant Bridport Bool Shop - thank you to them and everyone who considers buying a book for us."

To help Kitty and Amber's appeal, pop into The Book Shop in South Street and buy a book, call the shop on 01308 422964 or contact it online at dorsetbooks.com
