Colfox students have raised £1,000 for the Ukraine appeal during a charity fun day.

Students from Toro house, one of the academy's four houses, organised the event, which included a cake sale, games, face painting and other fun activities.

Julia May, head of Toro house, said: "Our students were delighted to raise so much for the Ukraine appeal. They worked hard organising activities and games, making posters and baking cakes - it was a terrific effort.

"Thanks to everyone who generously supported the day and helped make it a success."

Colfox is also stepping in and accepting and sorting donations, working with volunteer groups who are sending aid to help those who have had to flee the war. Students are volunteering to help, sort, park and label donations.

Adam Shelley, headteacher of the Sir John Colfox Academy, said: "Well done to our students who worked hard to raise £1,000 for the Ukraine Appeal, it was great to see so much generosity from our whole school community.

"I am also pleased that we are able to support local volunteer groups in our community, who are working hard to send aid to Poland to help those arriving from Ukraine. I am very proud of our students for volunteering to process these donations, this is a great opportunity to take positive action. I'd like to thank my colleague Katie Wilkinson for co-ordinating these efforts.

"We do understand that for logistical reasons, many charities are asking for money rather than goods, to be donated. Therefore, please consider making a financial donation instead if you can. Anyone who wants to donate money should please visit the Disasters Emergency Committee's Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal at dec.org.uk."

Once goods have been processed, they will be delivered by school minibus to Cains Farm, which is sending a second lorry load of donations this month. Additional donations will be delivered to the Bridport-Ukraine support group, which is arranging for them to be transported to areas where supplies are needed.

Katie Wilkinson, higher level teaching assistant, is co-ordinating the response. She said: "We can accept donations of hygiene essentials, including feminine hygiene, long life food, torches and batteries, warm coats and clothes, baby clothes, waterproofs, thermoses, thermal blankets, clean sleeping bags and small tents. Please donate quality items - clothes in particular should be in a good condition and suitable for winter weather.

"We would also appreciate bulk donations or large, sturdy cardboard boxes to help us with packing. Please contact us before dropping these off."

If you are part of a large organisation willing to donate items in bulk, email [email protected] to arrange delivery to a larger collection point.
