The fire service and police have been called to multiple bin fires in Bridport today (Friday).

Fire crews from Bridport Fire Station were first called at 2.05am to Golden Dragon Chinese takeaway in West Street.

On arrival crews found one bin well alight against a building and used one hose reel jet to put out the fire.

The second fire engine wasn't required but on returning to station found another bin fire outside Bridport Post Office. One hose reel jet was used to extinguish the fire.

And just as the second appliance was returning to the station, it was sent to another bin fire in Rivervale. They found one bin well alight between a fence and a car.

A spokesman for Bridport Fire Station said: "Due to suspicious circumstances the police were requested to attend and hopefully will be able to obtain CCTV footage.

"Thankfully there was no damage to any properties other than the bins. Had these fires not been spotted and dealt with quickly, it could have escalated further resulting in significant fires causing major damage to property and risk to life."

The fourth bin fire of the day was just before 9.15am.

The spokesman added: "We would like to remind people to ensure cigarettes are extinguished fully before disposal, no hot ashes are disposed of in bins and batteries are separated from other waste and left out for recycling collections."
