A side extension is planned for Beaminster Fire Station with two off street parking spaces – with the new area to be shared with the police.

Dorset councillors are being asked to approve the changes to the Clay Lane building when they meet next week on May 18.

The planning application for the 37 square metre extension says it will provide dedicated firefighter and police facilities comprising an office, lecture room and welfare facilities. Building material proposed will match the existing fire station with the windows fitted with mirror film to prevent people looking in.

The two parking spaces will be to the western edge of the site next to the existing access into the rear yard from Hogshill Mead. The spaces will also to be shared by the two services and will allow for the relocation of the firefighter's charity collection point.

Support for the application has come from Beaminster Town Council with no public comments received.

The consultation received from the town council noted that there is currently no indication as to when there is a police presence in the building, with town councillors questioning whether this could be addressed as part of the re-development.

Dorset Council planning officers are recommending approval.
