Bridport fire crews have been called out to two fires in the open in less than 24 hours, despite the public advised not to have them.

Firefighters were called to Beaminster on Saturday morning just after 10am.

A spokesman for Bridport Fire Station said: "On arrival crews found a local business burning undesirable waste material, including carpet, underlay and mattresses amongst other things. The fire was also under high voltage power lines.

"Crews used two hose reel jets, two tanks of water and small tools to extinguish the fire. Advice was given to the business owner.

"Commercial waste should always be disposed of in a responsible manner to avoid any unnecessary damage to the environment.

"It is also worth noting that crews were unable to gain access to the emergency water supply tank on the trading estate as a vehicle had parked in front of the supply coupling. Please be mindful of where you park your vehicles and avoid blocking hydrants and water supplies."

The crew was also called out to a fire in West Bay on Friday evening, just before 9.10pm.

The spokesman added: "On arrival it was found to be a controlled burn and advice was given to the owner.

"Although we are advising people not to have controlled burns at the moments, if you still intend to have one, please inform our control by following this link."

Residents have been advised not to have bonfires during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown. Many false alarms attended by crews are caused by bonfires and such calls cause a drain on the service's resources.
