A touching tribute to a young boy who died of cancer has been completed and officially opened after more than two years.

Branden's Trail at Bridport Primary School has been transformed from a derelict play area into a space where the child can go and reflect, enjoy and receive support when in need as a legacy to Branden Wayland, who died when he was five-years-old

The project was set up and led by the Bridport Young Persons' Action Trust (BYPAT) and it has created a space with plants, a shelter and colourful memorials outside the classroom that Branden was in.

Arthur Woodgate, of BYPAT, said: "We worked closely with the school council to revitalise and reimagine the trail. They were all consulted on every decision that we made, everything you see here they've either chosen or asked for.

"It's a memorial to Branden but it's also a legacy to other children and I would like to quote from the school council: 'The trail is remembering a young life lost, the trail means a lot, children can feel comforted in this space, they have a calm space to come to. We considered who is the trail actually for, for those struggling with life in some way, we asked who may be struggling with life in any way - anyone. The trail is for everyone'.

"So here we are after more than two years and so many thanks are due

Thanks to my grandson Oscar for drawing my attention to what was left of the original trail."

Some members of the school council took in turns to share what Branden's Trail means and why it's there.

Bridport mayor, Ian Bark, was the guest of honour to officially open the trail, along with town crier John Collingwood who shared a special cry.

Councillor Bark said: "The project was coordinated by the Bridport Young Persons' Action Trust and Arthur Woodgate is probably the key member of that trust and I would like to say thank you to Arthur for all you've done to bring this splendid project together, this refurbishment means it's even bigger and better than it was before.

"A few other thank yous, Bridport Town Council's team led by Daryl Chambers. They do so much around the town and projects like this wouldn't happen without them.

"There are quite a lot of people involved in different ways - Bridport Arts Centre, Lions Club, the Round Table, the Friends of Bridport Primary School, Greenman Campus Northern Ireland, Waitrose community fund, Bridport Gardening Club, Bridport Rotary Club, Bridport Town Council, Brit Valley Rotary Club, Green Legacy Hiroshima, Rex Trevett Fund and West Bay Car Boot Fund and thanks to anyone I have forgotten or missed out.

"One other thing that is particularly significant is in recognising the fact that the school is a rights respecting school, that is a UNICEF award and that's a significant award and this links very nicely with that."
