The Mayor of Bridport was put behind bars as he toured one of Dorset's top attractions during a visit to Dorchester this week!

Cllr Ian Bark and his wife Anne were among mayors and council leaders from across Dorset to be invited to civic day in Dorchester, by mayor of the county town, Cllr Janet Hewitt.

The day started with coffee in the cafe at Shire Hall Museum, where leaflets and promotional materials about Dorchester attractions and upcoming events were handed out.

The party then enjoyed a tour of Shire Hall Museum, a former court house and award-winning social justice museum, bringing 200 years of justice to life.

The guests enjoyed touring the former court room, trying on the judge's wigs and hats and getting an up close look at jail cells that would have once housed historic figures such as the Tolpuddle Martyrs.

The party then moved on to Dorset Museum, where they were given another guided tour around the attraction, which recently underwent a major £16million refurbishment.

Activities during the day also included a lesson in CPR and how to use a defibrillator in the event of an emergency.

Cllr Hewitt said: "A massive thank you to both the museums; they were fantastic, their guides were so good and very welcoming.

"It was a great hit with the different mayors and the chair of Dorset Council, and I would recommend people to support our wonderful museums in our county town; the history is second to none.

"Teaching CPR to the mayors and their escorts, giving these people the skills to be able to help in an emergency, is very rewarding and we also showed them how to use a defibrillator.

"The day was a total success. I personally thank all those that attended."
