Students and staff at Mountjoy School in Beaminster celebrated World Book Day in style, even showcasing their outfits on a 'character catwalk'!

World Book Day is a charity that is celebrated with a national event every year. Its aims are to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own.

The charity says that reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child's future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents' educational background or their income, and they aim to see for children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a life-long habit of reading for pleasure and the improved life chances this brings them.

Mountjoy literacy lead Stacey Sellick said: "We love stories, books and reading all year round at Mountjoy and extended our World Book Day celebrations to last the whole week.

"Many students became authors, illustrators and storytellers and their books are now bound and can be scanned out of our school library for others to enjoy."

Pupils at the school also completed a 'ReadforGood' Readathon to raise funds to ensure that children spending time in hospital have access to high quality books to enjoy and staff to read to them.
