From Page to Screen's sixth film has been decided and added to this year's line-up.
The Personal History of David Copperfield is based on the novel by Charles Dickens, screenplay by Simon Blackwell and Armando Iannucci and directed by Armando Iannucci.
It is described as a 'fresh, playful and boldly optimistic take on the perennial Dickens classic'.
From birth to infancy, from adolescence to adulthood, the good-hearted David Copperfield is surrounded by kindness, wickedness, poverty and wealth, as he meets an array of remarkable characters in Victorian England. As David sets out to be a writer, in his quest for family, friendship, romance and status, the story of his life is the most seductive tale of all.
Beloved characters are brought to life by an all-star cast, including Dev Patel (David Copperfield), Tilda Swinton (Betsey Trotwood), Hugh Laurie (Mr Dick), Peter Capaldi (Mr Micawber) and Ben Whishaw (Uriah Heep).
David Copperfield is often regarded as an autobiographical novel, 'a very complicated weaving of truth and invention', with events following Dickens' own life. Of the books he wrote, it is said to be his favourite.
A spokesman for From Page to Screen said: "The Personal History of David Copperfield was my favourite adaptation of last year and it was a shame that its distribution in cinemas was another experience cut short by Covid.
"Armando Iannucci's writing and directing manages to be both moving and very, very funny - and the stunning design and casting make it feel contemporary. It's a brilliant antidote to the tough times of the past year and I'm looking forward to my second dose.
"David Copperfield is considered the most auto-biographical of Dickens' novels which resonates with the theme of life-story and memoir in the festival, from Ammonite's imagining of a late chapter in Mary Anning's life, to the documentary portrait of Oliver Sacks and the adaptation of Mohamadou Ould Slahi's devastating account of his time as a Guantanamo prisoner. Don't miss the brilliant conversation between him, director Kevin Macdonald and Edith Bowman.
The five other films in the festival are: The Father, Oliver Sachs - His Own Life, The Mauritanian, Beats and Ammonite.
A festival pass can allow you to see all the films and costs £20.
