The group behind the town's Christmas cheer evening is embarking on 'Bridport's Cheer-Up'.

There will be a special market on Saturday, December 12 and Bridport businesses are being encouraged to take up the offer of a free Christmas tree this year.

Christmas lights have also started going up in the town.

In a letter to businesses, Millie Webber-Cox, on behalf of Bridport Christmas Cheer Committee, said: "The Bridport Christmas Cheer Committee had to take the very difficult decision to cancel this year's Christmas cheer. We are, however, planning to do a Christmas market as an extension of our wonderful historic street market on Saturday, December 12.

"We know during these unprecedented times many local businesses have faced a tough few months of uncertainty. Therefore, the committee has decided to supply and install Christmas trees this year, free of charge."

A tree will be supplied to the business, fitted and taken down, as well as fitted with the business' own lights. Any problems with lights and the committee will arrange for a qualified electrician to check and repair, which will be invoiced separately.

Any business that would like a tree should complete and return the slip that has been delivered to them to Bridport Tourist Information Centre. If they have any questions or want further information, they should email [email protected]

Also, if the business does not have their own Christmas tree lights, they should indicate this on the return slip and the committee will arrange for contractors to advise them on the purchase of lights.
