Thinking of getting together for a barbecue? Ditch the disposable barbecues like Groves Nurseries
With the nice - but chilly weather - and more lockdown restrictions being eased earlier in the week, residents may be thinking of getting together for barbecues.
However, barbecues in open, public spaces continue to be an issue across the county when not disposed of properly, with many leading to large fires attended by our fire service.
Groves Nurseries permanently stopped selling disposable barbecues following the devastating fire at Wareham Forest in May last year.
At the time, the garden centre said it wanted "to do its bit" after the huge fire destroyed heathland the size of 230 football pitches.
Although the cause is believed to be accidental, 11 disposable barbecues were found by those investigating the blaze and firefighters in the area the fire is known to have started.
Disposable barbecues and bonfires in open public spaces are still a big issue and heath fires continue to be a major risk this year, with Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service issuing an amber alert.
Dorset Council will be educating visitors and residents on how unacceptable it to use the barbecues and the need to dispose of them in a safe way, although there are calls for a ban on disposable barbecues across the county.
Charlie Groves previously said that he doesn't think people need to use them and although the garden centre stopping the sale of disposable barbecues might not make a huge difference, he hoped Groves could lead the way.
