Walk of the week: Boarsbarrow Hill and Loders

We are introducing a new feature - walk of the week.

Every week we will be sharing a circular walk in and around our local area with directions and photos. We use the OS Map app, which is very useful if you are out walking.

If you subscribe to our newsletter, you will be able to receive the walk first every Friday and be able to enjoy it over the weekend.

This week's walk takes in Boarsbarow Hill and Loders and starts at Green Lane, on the other side of the bus stop by the Lee Lane turning on the A35 out of Bridport to Dorchester, opposite the Gundry Road turning (OS Grid Ref: SY 48057 93219).

It was quite muddy and overgrown in some places - so please do take care - and takes around one hour and 10 minutes - not including stops. It is around three miles but was easy walking without strenuous inclines.

If you are driving to the start, you can park in Lower Walditch Lane or Jessopp Avenue.

The lane looks quite overgrown from the road, but is walkable.

Take the lane and continue down it, following it right down a field where you will come to a crossways. Turn left down the track before taking the right grassier fork up towards the hill.

Continue along this path until you reach a gate and can no longer go straight. Turn left here and go through the gate in front of you to another field, which you will see has another gate to the right which you will also go through.

This path will bring you out at Yondover with New House Farm on your right.

Turn left to walk along the road but take the footpath on your right just before the railway bridge and follow the path through the field. If you wanted to make the walk shorter, you can continue under the railway bridge to go to Loders.

Those who take the footpath to the right, you will come out on to a small lane. You want to turn left here but you may here a water mill which can be seen by turning right and is a very small distance up the road.

Walk under the railway bridge and take the footpath to the right up some steps and once you get to the top of the bridge take the footpath to the left, which was quite over grown and easily missed. It is part of the old railway line and you will follow the path round to the left with garden fences on your right.

Carry on past the homes and cross the road, re-joining the footpath slightly to the right and go up in between two houses and go through the gate. Follow the path and go through the next gate, continuing straight and you will come out onto a road.

Turn left onto the road and walk down into Loders.

You will come out opposite the school. The Loders and Uploders Scarecrow Festival is currently on so this would be a great opportunity to explore the two villages and find the scarecrows. A map is available to see and take a photo of on noticeboards.

There are two pubs - The Crown Inn at Uploders and the Loders Arms in Loders - where you can get a drink or something to eat. Please check the pubs opening hours.

Returning back to Bridport, from the junction opposite the school, turn left to walk through Loders towards the church.

Take the footpath on your left before you get to the church and go over the bridges. At the kissing gate go right through the field, aiming for the top left corner where there is a gate and continue along the path.

You will see a farm to your right. Go through a gate and turn left away from the house, carrying on straight where it forks to the left. Follow the path round the corner to the right and you should be back at the crossways towards the start of the walk.

Take the same footpath back up the field that you came down at the beginning and follow Green Lane back to the start.

This walk is just a suggestion, you can of course take any different routes you wish to make it more direct or make it longer. Always take extra care where the ground is uneven or wet.
