West Bay fishermen have joined a new initiative to help keep our seas litter free.

A new recycling bin provided by Odyssey Innovations - an organisation that has created a circular economy through recycling marine plastic - is now in West Bay for fishermen to get rid of any old lines, nets and other fishing-related waste, which will be recycled back into things like kayaks.

Fishermen, harbour masters, Litter Free Coast and Sea and Odyssey Innovation have worked together to get the bin in place, along with others at Lyme Regis and Weymouth.

Much of the waste fishing gear has been put into bins and went to landfill, but these new bins will ensure it is instead recycled.

James Radcliffe, Bridport Harbour Master, said: "We are really grateful to Odyssey Innovation and Litter Free Coast and Sea for helping us set this up.

"Our local fishermen have been wanting to get something like this in place for a while so we are all excited to start using it."

Odyssey Innovations will be sending all the materials collected to be recycled and will be keeping track of the amount that Dorset fishermen recycle each year.

Matilda Manley, co-ordinator for Litter Free Coast and Sea, said: "We have some brilliant fishermen in Dorset who are real custodians of the sea.

"This scheme will help them do even more to help create a litter free sea locally, so we are very grateful to Odyssey Innovations for setting up and delivering this fantastic scheme for free in this area."
