Local MP Chris Loder has hailed the "tremendous" news that West Dorset has been ranked at number two in England for COVID vaccination rate, following a number one ranking the week before.

Mr Loder said: "It's tremendous news that we are one of the top constituencies protecting the community from coronavirus with the first Covid jab."

West Dorset ranks as one of the highest constituency in England for the percentage of people who have received their first dose of an approved vaccine, analysis shows.

More than 64,000 people in West Dorset have now received their first dose of a Covid jab - 64,697 up to April 4 which represents 79 per cent of the total adult population.

Many have received their jabs at Bridport Medical Centre, which has been administering the vaccine to patients from across Bridport, Beaminster, Lyme Regis and Charmouth.

The medical centre saw another 1,600 patients at its clinic last Wednesday, including the first in the 30s age bracket, and more than 2,000 on Saturday.

Mr Loder added: "I've been to visit our vaccination centres across the constituency and it has been great to see the hard work to make this happen.

"It is thanks to our doctors, nurses and volunteers who have all come together to run such an amazingly smooth operation."
