A shelter for a special memorial in tribute to a little boy who died from cancer will be installed this winter, thanks to generous donations.

Branden's Trail at Bridport Primary School is being transform after the area became derelict and will become a legacy to Branden Wayland, who died of cancer when he was five-years-old. Pupils will be able to go there and get support.

The switching on of Bridport's Christmas lights in Bucky Doo Square earlier this month saw Bridport Round Table present a cheque for £400 towards the all-weather shelter.

Simon Vallard, chairman of Bridport Round Table, said: "On behalf of the Bridport Round Table and its members, it's great to be back putting on events and raising funds for good causes like Branden's Trail. This is one of many of the great causes that we have been lucky enough to donate towards.

"All of Bridport Round Table's hard work wouldn't be possible without the kindness and generosity of the people and local businesses in and around Bridport, so a big thank you goes to them."

The cheque was accepted by two young members of the Bridport Primary School council with their families.

The donation has been added to the £250 contributed by the Bridport Young Persons' Action Trust (BYPAT) charity, and a further £200 from the Rex Trevett fund.

Margaret Trevett said: "All the family have been so involved with the school over the years. It's good to be able to help a little."

The shelter will be erected by town surveyor Daryl Chambers and his team during the Christmas break.

Meanwhile the art centre's youth engagement officer, Bryony Moores O'Sullivan, has been joined by local artists Imogen Neylan and Theadora Brazier in working with children on their mural for Branden's Trail.

After a recent design workshop at the school, Bryony said: "The whole mural will be based on their ideas. We had an utterly wonderful day and we have a wealth of images."

Thanks to widespread support from organisations and individuals across the community, this project will both commemorate the life of Branden Wayland, a little boy who died of cancer, and, as a lasting legacy, provide any child facing difficulties with a safe refuge of support.

Branden's Trail is a partnership project between the BYPAT charity, Bridport Town Council, Bridport Arts Centre, Bridport Gardening Club and Bridport Primary School.
