Bridport Take A Knee in Bucky Doo Square for Windrush Day

To mark Windrush Day, members of the Bridport Take A Knee group gathered in Bucky Doo Square.

Take A Knee continues in the town and is a regular, short protest vigil against racism and happens every Wednesday at 6pm in the square. Everyone is welcome to join.

Windrush Day was introduced in June 2018 on the 70th anniversary of the Windrush migration and observed on June 22.

On June 22, 1948, 492 Caribbean people were brought to the UK on the Empire Windrush ship. They were recruited by the British government and offered jobs, such as in the production of steel, coal, iron and food, in public transport and staffing the new NHS system, to help repair the UK's economy after the war.

However, they were faced with extreme intolerance from many and denied access to private employment and accommodation because of the colour of their skin.
