An event recognising all those that have helped the community throughout the coronavirus pandemic could be held in the town.

Members of Bridport Town Council's environment and social wellbeing committee discussed the idea.

Town clerk Will Austin suggested incorporating it with Bridport Community Fair, which is organised by the town council each year, usually in February, due to the vast amount of events already hoping to take place after June 21.

It is due to be held later in the year, possibly outdoors, which could make it a bigger event.

Councillor Sarah Carney agreed there should be an event but also called for there to be a memorial.

She said: "We thought maybe the Millennium Green with all the stalls around it and the community groups that have been involved in Covid and some of the people that woke up the first morning after lockdown and just said, 'right, I', going to feed Bridport'.

"It will be nice to hear from them and how they went about it because the organisation was phenomenal and I wouldn't have known where to start.

"It's about celebrating the community spirit, thanking them… and also make some permanent memorial, because this is the nearest thing any of us has been through that's like the war. It would be great to have a memorial for our volunteers and key workers."

Cllr Ian Bark, mayor of Bridport, also wanted those working in retail and Bridport's businesses to be recognised as they have been doing an "amazing job".

In his latest blog post, Cllr Bark visited as many businesses in the town centre and West Bay as he could to thank them.

He said: "Some of the things I have found out they've been doing really make you incredibly proud to be somebody who lives in this town.

"There are so many different things that I've heard. We think about the volunteers, we think about the NHS, I think we forget about the businesses, and a phenomenal amount of work has gone on."

The idea, in conjunction with the community fair, will continue to be looked at by the council.
