In a global day of action to help combat climate change as COP26 was underway, sixty cyclists took to the streets of Bridport.

The group, including some children, took a circuit round Bridport on Saturday to mark the middle of the COP26 global warming conference in Glasgow - and to demonstrate a carbon-free way of travelling.

Led by Bridport mayor, councillor Ian Bark, their journey took them past market stalls and shoppers, many of whom clapped and applauded.

Scott Morrison, chairman of organiser West Dorset Friends of the Earth, said: "It was a quiet and friendly demonstration about how serious the situation is.

"We had to show local people that we must keep up pressure on negotiators to save our environment and secure a future for generations to come."

When the riders reached Bucky Doo Square, they gave a quick shout of, 'no more blah blah', echoing the words of Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.

They then made their way to the community orchard where the mayor said: "Much of the technology to deliver a low carbon future already exists, and the speed with which it is delivered needs to accelerate rapidly across the globe if we are to avoid environmental catastrophe.

"These days, with the advent of electric cycles, even more people could and should be using cycling as their number one choice. Even when on a shopping trip, the addition of panniers to your bike means you do not need always use your car."

He ended by quoting a declaration made by Bridport Town Council: "We wish to proclaim that for one or two generations to usurp all the wealth of the planet, leaving future generations in serious crisis is unconscionable. And today we wish to show our concern and love for those who come after us, including the living creatures who can't speak for themselves."
