Bridport: Week of success as students pick up A level and GCSE results

By Lottie Welch 12th Aug 2021

It's been a week of 'outstanding achievements' as students across Bridport have picked up A level and GCSE results.

Students at the Sir John Colfox Academy and Beaminster School picked up their GCSE results today (Thursday), but for a second year things were quite different due to the Covid pandemic.

Some of the students at the Sir John Colfox Academy who achieved "outstanding results" included:

  • Eddie Rose - who achieved the top grade (9) in all 10 of his subjects
  • Zachary Dixon - who achieved seven grade 9s and three grade 8s
  • Jessica George - who achieved four grade 9s and six grade 8s
  • Jolene Johnson - who achieved four grade 9s and five grade 8s

A spokesman for the school said: "We are equally proud of all our students who have worked so hard to achieve their potential. Hannah Moye achieved an outstanding grade 6, three grade 5s and four grade 4s. Reece Burgiss thoroughly deserves his excellent three grade 5s, two grade 4s and three grade 3s.

This year, following the cancellation of exams, grades were awarded through a process of teacher assessed grades, against a national standard and approved and awarded by the exam boards. The Government is not publishing performance data for any school or colleges this year due to the varying impact of the pandemic.

Adam Shelley, headteacher at the Sir John Colfox Academy, said: "This is an excellent set of results and I am absolutely delighted that so many of our students have done so well.

"The students have worked incredibly hard and I applaud their commitment and determination they have shown through this pandemic and we look forward to seeing what they will achieve in the future. They have achieved fantastic grades across a broad range of subjects.

"I would also like to recognise the dedication of the Sir John Colfox staff who have worked very hard to ensure that our students achieve these results."

And there was success at Beaminster School too as students also ripped open those envelopes to celebrate their well-deserved success.

Lisa Walton, head of Year 11, said: "It's lovely to see our fantastic Year 11 back in school for one last time.

"I am incredibly proud of the hard work and determination that they have shown to complete the required assessments and get through this torrid time. This has been a really challenging few months for them and they richly deserve these grades in the face of such adversity."

Students of particular note, who gained the equivalent of eight or more A grades (9 to 7) were:

  • Felipe Brown
  • Rosie Donaldson
  • Megan Dunlop
  • Eve Higman
  • Bella Leather
  • Milly McIntyre
  • Cadie Noer
  • Charlie Pomeroy
  • Guy Scarborough
  • Imogen Sear
  • Nikolai Slater
  • Callum Tomlinson
  • Harrison Wallis

Pastoral and careers staff were available to support students with clarification about teacher assessed grades, offer transition advice and give students time to discuss their future options.

Headteacher Keith Hales said: "This has been a wonderful year group who, I know, would have proved themselves in their examinations and so are very worthy recipients of soe stunning results.

"We wish them all well and look forward to welcoming many of them back with us in the Beaminster and Sir John Colfox joint sixth form in September."

A levels

The Beaminster Colfox joint sixth form once again celebrated excellent A level results on Tuesday, with final grades assessed by teachers across the two schools due to the ongoing challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Adam Teasdale, head of sixth form at the Sir John Colfox Academy, said: "We are so proud of all our students. They have been resilient, positive, mature and committed to their studies and all have worked extremely hard to gain the results they deserve. One of the benefits of the joint sixth form is how well we know our students."

James See, head of sixth form at Beaminster School, added: "We are delighted with the achievements of our students and pleased that they have secured places at their universities of choice, degree level apprenticeships and in the workplace."

Usually, the joint sixth form would publish percentages of students achieving certain grade bands, but due to the exceptional circumstances, Dorset schools have decided to focus on individual student performance.

Of particular note:

  • Thomas Dulwich A* A* A* A*
  • Ben Leather A* A* A* A*
  • Daisy Parsons A* A* A* A*
  • Alfie Webb A* A* A* A*

  • Amber Case A* AA

  • Marcus Caile A* A* BC
  • Grace Holland A* AB (A in Core Maths)
  • Jack Raybould AAA (A* in EPQ)

Students receiving technical qualifications from the Yeovil partnership aspect of the joint sixth form also did exceptionally well.

Adam Shelley, headteacher at the Sir John Colfox Academy, said: "These are results to be proud of. Students have worked so hard to achieve fantastic results while their education has been disrupted due to the pandemic.

"The results they have achieved will allow them to move in to the next phase of their education or employment, which is absolutely brilliant."

Almost every student applying for university was placed on their first choice. All students now have places confirmed and are preparing for their next steps.

Mr Shelley added: "The progression of our students on to the next stage of their lives is always our priority and this year is no different.

"Our students have now confirmed places in many of the best universities in the world, including Bath, Durham, Exeter, Cardiff, Birmingham, Bristol, Southampton and Swansea. We also have many students pursuing alternative routes to university, including a placement on the competitive Degree Apprenticeship at Leonardo Helicopters."

Keith Hales, headteacher at Beaminster School, said: "This year, following the cancellation of exams, grades were awarded through a process of teacher assessed grades, against a national standard and approved and awarded by the exam boards.

"Students deserve huge credit for their fortitude in such circumstances, and teachers for the enormous amount of work they put into implementing the system at great speed.

"The Government is not publishing performance data for any schools or colleges this year due to the varying impact of the pandemic."
