Bridport: West Dorset Mencap launch new grant after selling its accessible caravan

By Lottie Welch 15th Jul 2021

West Dorset Mencap has set up a new grant scheme to help fund holidays or days out for people with learning disabilities and their families who live in the West Dorset region.

The charity took the very difficult decision during the pandemic to sell its accessible caravan at Littlesea Holiday Park in Weymouth.

A spokesman for West Dorset Mencap said: "Our charity has owned a caravan at this site for over 20 years and during this time hundreds of people with a learning disability have enjoyed special holidays with their families and carers."

In recent years, West Dorset Mencap has seen fewer local people benefitting from using the caravan, so the committee agreed the time has come to sell and to set up a grant scheme which will fund holidays or special days out.

The scheme is open to anyone with a learning disability who lives in West Dorset and grants can be awarded to help towards the cost of a holiday within the UK or a special day out.

The spokesman added: "Whether it be for a holiday in Cornwall or a day out at a local attraction, we would like to help.

"We would like to thank everyone who has continued to support our charity shop in Bridport. We are delighted to be open again, welcoming customers and donations and raising much needed funds for our charity."
