Bridport Town Council has objected to Co-op installing new illuminated signage.

The supermarket on Sea Road North has applied to Dorset Council for new signage on its building, in its car park and an illuminated 4.5m totem sign by the road.

The Co-op's current signs on the shop are illuminated.

The application was discussed at Bridport Town Council's planning committee meeting.

Councillor Sarah Williams said: "Although it's outside of the town centre, I still have problems with illuminated signs on supermarkets, I think everybody knows where supermarkets are. I think the totem is rather large and unnecessary.

"If you look back a few years ago when we had a similar application from Lidl, we were very against illuminated signage on supermarkets and I would like to stick to that."

Cllr Anne Rickard agreed and said the committee should "stick to our guns".

Cllr Dave Rickard said: "One of the reasons we succeeded in the over illumination of Lidl is it's opposite a conservation area in St Andrew's Road - I'm not sure whether we still have that designation as far down as the Co-op - but it is adjacent to some fairly historic buildings.

"I'm happy to go with Sarah's objection on the over-illumination of these signs, they don't need to do that, people know where they are."

Cllr Sarah Carney said the committee should go with what was written in the Bridport Area Neighbourhood Plan.

"We should always be supporting that and I understand there are stipulations in the neighbourhood plan, but I'm not sure if it refers to the designated town centre area or this far out.

"But there again, Dave has said there has been one rule set for Lidl then it would be unfair to do something different for the Co-op."

Town clerk Will Austin said it appears the Co-op is still opposite the conservation area.

The decision will be made by Dorset Council.
